Tourist Information on the Towns and Villages of France

Each of France's 96 departments has a main town (where the prefect and elected council are based).

Towns vary greatly from the Gothic cathedral towns of Amiens and Chartres in the north to the medieval towns of Cordes and Carcassonne in the south. If you are interested in monastic France then take your pick from towns such as Cluny and Fontenay which developed as centres for Christian scholars. Gallo-Roman enthusiasts should head for towns such as Nimes and Arles where you'll find some of the best preserved amphitheatres in Europe.

Chateaux towns such as Blois and Cherverny are always popular and for Belle Epoque elegance try Monte-Carlo or Biarritz where art nouveau architecture is seen in abundance.

Meditteranean towns such as St Raphael, St Maxime, Nice and St Tropez are centres for sailing, golfing and casinos and have always been a playground for the rich and famous.

Lastly, a trip to France wouldn't be complete without visiting one of the delighful Provencal perched villages such as Gordes or Les Baux-de-Provence with a labyrinth of medieval streets that lead up to superb vantage points.
