Savoie is graced by the French Alps - one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the world.
Here you'll fine the wealthy ski resorts of Meribel & Val d'Isere which have managed to retain a traditional Alpine atmosphere. Skiers and snowboarders of all levels will be catered for here.
Savoie has France's oldest National Park - the Vanoise - a mix of rugged mountains, steep valley & glaciers. The scenery is spectacular and ideal for hikers who can see with beavers and Alpine ibex.
To the northeast of Chambery lies another national park, Massif des Bouges which also offers hiking opportunities & fantastic scenery.
- Sports in the Alps - choose snow sports or wait until Spring for the hiking season. Additional sports include golf, tennis, paragliding, canoeing, white-water rafting, mountain climbing and mountain biking.
- Spa Town of Aix-les-Bains - on the Lac du Bourget, elegant Aix-les-Bains is possibly the most popular spa town in France.
- Chambery - don't miss Chambery's Fontaine des Elephants or Les Charmettes, a 17th century country house where Rousseau and his mistress lived. The Musee Fauvre is worth visiting for its collection of Impressionist paintings including works by Degas, Sisley & Rodin.
