where to go - what to see - what to doPamiers is situated on the east bank of the Ariege river and an ideal stopover for the Pyrenees and other sites of interest in the Ariege. It derives its name from a town in Asia-Minor to commemorate the exploits of Roger II on his return from the first Crusade.
Foix has also been home to four different monastic communities since 1295. The Cathedrale St-Antonin in place du Mercadel has an impressive bell-tower which is similar in style to Toulouse architecture.
Pamiers is also known for its 'usine' which produces metal, aluminium and titanium pieces used in the aeronautical/space industry. Guided tours of the factory are possible all year-round. Fortified bastide towns such as Mazeres and Saint-Martin d'Oydes are also worth a visit.
