where to go - what to see - what to doThe typically Gascon town of Condom grew up around its decorative cathedral that was almost destroyed by the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion. Fortunately the locals paid a huge ransom thus staving off disaster and preserving the town's heritage.
Condom lies at the centre of the Armagnac region and also prospers from selling grain, flour and timber. The River Baise stretches alongside the old quays that were hollowed out to transport Armagnac to Bordeaux - a river cruise is a must! There are also some elegant 'hotels particuliers' or 18th-century mansions including Hotel de Gallard (rue H Cazaubon) or Hotel de Gensac (rue de Roquepine). Unfortunately they are not open to the public but worth a look from the outside.
