where to go - what to see - what to doLourdes was made famous by Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 who saw eighteen visions of the Virgin Mary in a cave near the town. Since then Lourdes has been a place of pilgrimage as important to the Catholics as Mecca is to the Muslims. Lourdes still draws approximately 5 million visitors per year. Once you've fought your way past the souvenir shops head to the Grotte de Massabielle - site of the apparitions.
Lourdes is a useful stopover if you are en-route to the Parc National des Pyrenees which comprises some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. For walking maps and information head to the Park Office at Cauterets or Luz-St-Saveur. Alternatively the Vallee des Gaves with its mountain streams and rivers is equally stunning and on your doorstep!
