To the northwest of Paris is the most wooded department of the Ile-de-France, the Yvelines. It offers numerous leisure and relaxation activities.
La Foret des Bois Chauveaux, although smaller than some of the others, affords fantastic views of the Bievre Valley. This is a rural landscape where tranquillity reigns - not hard to see why it inspired some of the great Impressionists such as Pissarro, Sisley and Renoir.
Yvelines is home to the famous Chateau de Versailles which under Louis XIV became the centre of political power in France.
The gardens are beautiful - the Grand Canal was the setting for Louis's extravagant boat parties. The Grand Trianon was built for Louis and Mme Maintenon to escape court life.
- Star gazing at Triel-sur-Seine - catch a glimpse of far-off galaxies and solar systems at the 'Parc aux Etoiles'.
- Marly-le-Roi - the Chateau de Monte-Cristo where Alexandre Dumas was born stills contains original manuscripts and objects belonging to the great writer.
- Historic Rambouillet - worth a visit for its chateau that was once used by Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette and is now used for state functions.
- Maisons-Laffitte - horse lovers will delight in the Musee du Cheval de Course which has the history of horse racing.
