Saint-Malo tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

St-Malo established itself as a wealthy port from 16th-19th centuries when its explorers such as Jacques Cartier discovered Canada and government commissioned pirates plundered rich loots from passing ships.  This wealth enabled St-Malo's ship-owners to build luxurious residences known as malouinières.

St-Malo is still a major port and ferry terminal today and it is not hard to see why it is one of the most popular destinations in Brittany.

Standing at the mouth of the river Rance, it is famed for its old walled city (intra-muros) complete with fish restaurants & creperies.  Once inside, head for the ramparts & Porte St-Vincent where there are breathtaking views of the bay of St-Malo and its islands.  At low tide (only) wander out to le Grand-Ble the isle where Chateaubriand sought solitude and inspiration and where he lies buried.

There are some great beaches just outside the old city walls, for example La Plage de Bon Secours or the striking Grande Plage.  Boat trips up the Rance to Dinan and out to the Iles Chausey, Ile de Cezembre and Cap Fréhel are also popular.

For those wishing to venture further afield Mont-St-Michel lies directly east of St Malo and as one of France's most celebrated sights, is well worth a visit.
