Puy-de-Dome tourist information
where to go - what to see - what to do
The Puy-de-Dome is a mix of extinct volcanoes, thick forest, rivers, lakes and mountains.
The oldest geological mountain range in France and part of France's largest national park, the Parc Naturel Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne. Ideal for sports enthusiasts.
The Puy-de-Dome is also popular for Romanesque churches and medieval castles. The elegant spa town and Le Mont Dore adds yet another dimension.
The capital of the department and the region is Clermont-Ferrand, a lively dynamic university town, home to the Michelin tyre and guidebook corporation.
- Puy de Dome - reach the top of this extinct volcano peak for the breathtaking views and the remains of the Roman temple of Mercury.
- Saint-Ours-les-Roches - find out what a volcanic eruption feels like at the Parc Europeen du Volcanisme, Vulcania.
- Clermont Ferrand - the Basilique Notre-Dame-du-Port is one of the most celebrated Romanesque churches in the region.
- Mont Dore - a relatively inexpensive ski resort with approximately 42kms of ski runs.
