Cantal tourist information
where to go - what to see - what to do
The Cantal department is dominated by mountains that were originally volcanic.
The highest peaks, Plomb du Cantal and the Puy Mary, are surrounded by deep valleys and pastureland used for sheep and dairy farming. In summer see the famous Salers cattle that produce the area's best-loved cheese - Cantal.
The Cantal is an outdoor paradise with popular activities including walking & trekking, fishing in the high Cezallier plateaus. Try canoeing or white water rafting in Vieillevie.
To the east the Puys disappear giving way to flat, high land.
- Salers - a base to discover the Cantal mountains, situated on an escarpment which affords fantastic views of the surrounding pastureland.
- Historic Cantal - the Chateau d'Anjony is one of the most magnificent of the Auvergne Chateaux, built by Louis II - a supporter of Joan of Arc.
- Puy Mary & Puy Cantal - get your walking boots on and explore some of the most majestic Puys of this wild & rugged countryside.
- Fly fishing - Enjoy the tranquillity of the Bes or Riaumau rivers.
