The most northern of the Auvergne departments is Allier.Known for its diverse landscape - oak forest to the northeast, vineyards of Saint-Pourcinois at its centre.
The Sioule gorges to the south and the Bourbonnaise Mountains to the southeast reach heights of 1287m in the Puy de Montoncel.
Moulins, seat of the Bourbon Dukes in the 10th century, is an attractive stopover for visitors as is the ever-popular spa town of Vichy and Montlucon.
Allier also attracts visitors for almost every sport from skydiving to rock climbing and cycling including the gentler pastime of walking.
- Horse riding in the Troncais Forest - discover one of the finest oak forests in Europe on horseback.
- Moulins - visit the Cathedrale Notre Dame or the Vieux Chateau, home to sculpture, painting and art from the 12th - 16th centuries.
- Thermal Baths at Vichy - pamper yourself at one of Vichy's most modern and luxurious spas, les Celestins. The douche de Vichy massage is a must!
