where to go - what to see - what to doSaint-Etienne has always been known as an industrial centre for coal-mining and armaments. However, urban renewal of late including the arrival of a new tramway has changed the face of this lively city. In fact, Saint-Etienne is now promoting itself as a city of art and culture and indeed there are some interesting museums and galleries to be found here.
Your exploration should probably begin around the lively Place de Peuple and the 18th century quarter around rue des Martyrs de Vingre. Nearby you'll also see some interesting metallic architecture which dates back to the Industrial Revolution, most notably the Gare de Chateaucreux. The small port also makes for an interesting detour.
