where to go - what to see - what to doLaon is the capital of the Aisne department and occupies a commanding position on the top of a narrow ridge looking out over the Champagne plains.
The medieval walled town oozes history such as the 12th century octagonal Knights Templar Chapelle des Templiers and the web of 18th century houses that fan out from the Cathedrale de Notre-Dame. The cathedral was built in the second half of the 12th century and was so ahead of its time that parts of its design were copied at Chartres, Reims and Notre-Dame in Paris. The city ramparts of the old town are also a must for fine views of the surrounding plains.
Laon is a good spot for cycling and walking in the forest of St-Gobain, the site of one of the greatest castles of the Middle Ages, Coucy-le-Chateau.
