Verdun tourist information
where to go - what to see - what to doVerdun is synonymous with the bloodiest battle of the Great War in which approximately a million men died in a year of non-stop fighting. The Germans had intended to strike a blow to French morale by attacking the forts of Douaumont and Vaux (which had been built to stave off attack after the humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870). The result was total devastation with nine villages being totally wiped out. Even today the land still follows the curves of the shell craters.
Although a strange site to draw so many visitors it is an instructive one! The museums, battlefields and memorials serve to remind us of the horrors of war. One of the most poignant memorials near the railway station is Rodin's winged figure of Victory unable to disentangle its legs from the body of a dead soldier.
