where to go - what to see - what to doNarbonne used to be the capital of the largest Roman colony in Gaul. Trade flourished until the 15th century when the harbour silted up and the river Aude changed its course. However, the immense construction of Cathedrale St-Just et St-Saveur had begun and what remains today is just part of a grander vision that was never completed.
This fantastic Gothic cathedral complete with good stained glass and Aubusson tapestries dominates the heart of the attractive and well restored medieval centre. Here you'll find many chic shops and good restaurants. You'll also find the Horreum which is an underground labyrinth of granaries dating back to Roman times and well worth exploring.
Narbonne prospers today from the vineyards that surround it. The town is clearly well preserved with the attractive Canal de la Robine lined with colourful barges and plane trees providing welcome shade in the midday sun.
