Sartene tourist information
where to go - what to see - what to doSartene is a medieval hillside town characterised by its granite houses built by the Genoese in the early 16th century. It has seen much trouble over the centuries being attacked by pirates from Algiers in 1583 who captured 400 local people and sold them on as slaves in North Africa. These attacks continued until the end of the 18th century.
Today the town is known as 'the most Corsican of Corsica's towns'. It is here you'll experience a Christian ceremony on Good Friday when a red-hooded penitent bears a cross through the old town. Apparently local inhabitants are keen to reveal the identity of the penitent who is picked by the local priest from a list of applicants wishing to atone for past wrong doings!
