where to go - what to see - what to doCherbourg has been an important naval base since the 19th century and is still frequented by the French Navy today. There is an industrial feel to this port that busies itself with ferries from England and transatlantic cargo ships. To escape the madness head to one of the restaurants on Quai Caligny or the pretty market square, Place General de Gaulle.
For shopaholics, streets such as rue Tour-Carree and rue de la Paix offer a wide range of local products and international brands. There are also some good museums, public parks, churches and abbeys worth investigating. If there's time you may also want to explore the Cotentin Peninsula with its wild rugged headlands and long sandy beaches - the ideal spot for getting away from it all!
