Bayeux tourist information
where to go - what to see - what to doBayeux miraculously escaped much of the World War II bombings which is one reason why it is such an attractive town today. It's 15th - 19th century hub is simply delightful particularly around rue St-Martin and rue St-Jean - the latter lined with boutiques, cafes and restaurants.
Bayeux is famed for two cross-Channel invasions. Firstly, William the Conqueror chose to set sail from Bayeux in 1066 in his quest to conquer England (which is detailed in the superb medieval Bayeux tapestry). Secondly, the Allied forces landed in Bayeux on June 6, 1944 which ultimately led to the liberation of France from Nazi rule. Bayeux was the first French town to be liberated by the Allies.
There are some excellent museums in Bayeux which detail events of both invasions. Bayeux is also a useful base for exploring some of the D-day beaches on the Cote de Nacre.
